Boston needs to build more housing. It also wants to preserve the sort of buildings that make it feel like Boston. And the developers behind a 40-story tower proposed near North Station say they’re trying to figure out how to do both.

Newton-based The RMR Group has proposed a 447-foot hotel and residential tower at the corner of Causeway and North Washington streets, the first building of its scale proposed downtown since the pandemic, and one that would transform a key gateway to the city at the foot of the newly redone Bill Russell Bridge.
