The Early Settlers of the West End (1630 – 1645): John Bigg, Artillery Officer
John Bigg or Biggs was one of the original Massachusetts Bay Colony settlers who arrived with John Winthrop in 1630. He was a second sergeant of the 1641 Artillery Company and married two different Mary’s after being widowed by his first wife. He owned 1 ½ acres of marsh in the Central Hill field. John supported the first free school (Boston Latin) by donating four shillings in 1636.
